Stuff You Should Know About Buying Computer Supplies

“Stuff” about Inkjet & Toner Cartridges!

Welcome to the Ibis Computer Supplies “Maiden Voyage” blog. We hope to continue to keep you up-to-date on “stuff” that you may not be aware of. We’re going to start this edition with some information about Inkjet & Toner cartridges. Here we go!!:

  • Ink Cartridges included with inkjet-type printer and other inkjet-type machines are considered “Starter Kits”. Be aware that “Starter Kit” really means that the cartridge(s) is only ½ full.  You really should purchase a separate set of cartridges along with the printer;
  • Consumers get hung up on “Brand” or OEM” replacement Inkjet/Toner cartridges. There are a multitude of examples of less expensive “Brand” cartridges that can replace an “OEM” cartridge.  For example, some Canon cartridges can replace H/P cartridges at much less cost;
  • Using a non-Brand replacement cartridge does NOT void a maintenance agreement(s)! That can be a false & sometimes deliberately illegal statement;
  • When your printer sends a message letting you know its time to replace the “Blackl” cartridge, for example, it is NOT necessary to replace all the color cartridges, too,  and vice-versa,  unless your printer indicates you need to do so. Just replace the one you need;
  • When ordering a toner cartridge, you’ll find, in some cases that there is offered a “Jumbo” or “Extra-Large” capacity cartridge. Usually the cost is much higher than the normal capacity cartridge.   THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS EXTRA CAPACITY !! Just remember – the cartridge still has to fit in the printer!  What’s really happening is that you're told, for example, that the “Regular” capacity cartridge has a 3000 page output, while the “Jumbo” cartridge output is 5000 pages. All that’s being done is the “Regular” capacity cartridge is being filled with only enough toner for 3000 copies, which means your getting a cartridge that’s only ½ to 2/3’s filled. The so-called “Jumbo” capacity cartridge is the same cartridge as the “Regular” but is simply being filled completely!    So, be careful!!
  • Also, be careful to check when buying any type of machine that takes an inkjet cartridge. Some manufacturers will place a computer chip in the “well” area and a corresponding chip on the cartridge. As long as the two chips “match”, your print jobs will work. But, when you need to replace the cartridge, these “chip” insure that you must buy the “OEM”/Manufacturer brand, otherwise you’ll get an error message indicating something about “incompatibility” or the “chips” don’t match;

AND A NON-PRINTER CARTRIDGE GOODIE !

Be careful of sales “Specials” on Printers, Faxes, & Multi-Function machines.  “Specials” can mean that the unit is out of production & parts for repair could be hard to come by (also, repairing a mal-function might just not be worth it).
